Metro Transit Gold Line Bus Rapid Transit

Metropolitan council & HNTB, saint paul, MN, 2017-present

Background
The planned Gold Line Bus Rapid Transit (GBRT) Project is a nine-mile dedicated bus rapid transit line that will link Saint Paul, Maplewood, Landfall, Oakdale, and Woodbury, MN, along Interstate-94 (I-94). This high-profile transit upgrade will connect people across the region to job centers, housing options, transit stations, and key destinations in the I-94 corridor.

Strengths & Solutions
As part of the ongoing development project, Young Environmental provides environmental permitting research, assessment, and stormwater compliance services to the project management team. We developed and maintain the GBRT Project permit matrix, an extremely complex document that memorializes all stages of approval. Our team modified the permit matrix used on previous transit projects to reflect relevant local, state, regional, and federal regulatory requirements for this project. We then researched probable permits and populated the matrix with key descriptions to document the associated acquisition processes. To facilitate the ongoing planning process, we are compiling environmental documentation including an environmental assessment worksheet (EAW), which defines the purpose and need for the project and ensures not only regulatory compliance, but environmental responsibility.

Project Impact
Once constructed in 2025, the GBRT will provide improved transit access to many communities across the eastern metro, connecting people with key needs for work, day-to-day transportation needs, and recreation.
